The Complexity Science Hub Vienna is a young research institution dedicated to a deeper quantitative and predictive understanding of complex systems for the betterment of society. We provide an exciting, creative, bureaucracy-free environment for open-minded visionaries who want to make a change and are brave enough to step out of mainstream science.


The main task is the communication of complex quantitative information by means of graphical representations. Responsibilities include (1) the design and development of visualizations of complex networks, geographic information, as well as visualizations of high dimensional data in offline and interactive online environments, including but not limited to dashboards, data analytic tools, and data stories; (2) the collaboration with our research scientists and science communications staff on the conception and construction of data visualizations.



  • Proved experience with front-end development of customized interactive data visualizations
  • Skills in data visualization and information design
  • Sense for aesthetics in visual presentation
  • Excellent command of English
  • Creative, proactive, self-organized, and team-oriented personality

Nice to have some combinations of these:

  • Experience with geographic or network visualization technologies such as Mapbox.js, Leaflet.js, Cytoscape.js
  • Experience with 3D graphics (Three.js / WebGL, etc.)
  • Experience with immersive technologies (AR/VR)
  • Experience in the creation of animated videos for science dissemination
  • Experience with databases, large-data handling, or python
  • Experience with server-based web services, e.g., flask, node.js
  • Education (Bachelors or Master’s degree) in a relevant field is a plus, eg data journalism, information visualization, graphic design, or computer science


A position, physically based in Vienna, in a dynamic, creative, internationally oriented, and open working environment. Austrian social insurance (ao health, pension), five weeks of paid vacation.
