Position Description:
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
As a Data Visualization Specialist at the Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise, you will play an important role in transforming complex economic data and research findings into compelling and visually engaging visualizations. Your expertise in data visualization techniques and tools will help translate quantitative information into intuitive graphics, charts, maps, and other dynamic graphics, enabling business leaders, policymakers, researchers, and the public to better understand and interpret economic trends and business and policy recommendations. You will work across our various initiatives including developing compelling graphics for our translational research products – the Kenan Insights and commentaries as well as working closely with the research team to develop visuals to support the American Growth Project and its partners. The American Growth Project is the Institute’s place-based economic indicators initiative.
This position will be part of the Institute’s research services team but will work cross-functionally with the external affairs team when producing and promoting work for public dissemination.
Specific responsibilities include:
* Data Visualization Design: Employ creative skills and understanding of data visualization principles to design and develop visually impactful and informative data visualizations, infographics, and interactive dashboards that effectively communicate the Institute’s proprietary data and research findings.
* Data Analysis and Interpretation: Collaborate with our Chief Economist, Kenan-Flagler faculty, and research staff to understand complex economic datasets and research findings and identify key insights and patterns that can be effectively visualized. Apply expertise in data analysis to uncover trends, correlations, and relationships that can enhance the storytelling aspect of the visualizations.
* Tool and Technology Expertise: Stay up-to-date with the latest data visualization tools, software, and libraries. Assist the Institute in choosing the best visualization tools; and leverage your proficiency in these tools to create dynamic and interactive visualizations that allow users to understand and explore economic data.
* Team Collaboration: This position will serve as the Institute’s primary visualization expert, and therefore will work closely with our in-house research analysts, economists, and graphic designers to understand their specific visualization needs and make recommendations based on those needs. Engage in collaborative discussions to identify the most effective visual representation of data and ensure that the visualizations align with research objectives and intended audience.
* Visualization Best Practices: Apply best practices in data visualization, including effective chart types, labeling, and accessibility considerations. Ensure that the visualizations adhere to data accuracy standards, , maintain clarity, and effectively convey the intended message to a diverse range of stakeholders. Follow the Institute’s style guide and update as needed to ensure visualization best practices.
Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
At least one year of experience with designing and creating compelling data visualizations, infographics, and/or interactive dashboards.
Education Requirements:
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Qualifications and Experience:
* Enthusiasm for making persuasive, data-driven arguments.
* Proficiency in data visualization tools such as Tableau, Looker and PowerBI.
* Proficiency in adobe tools including InDesign and Illustrator a plus.
* Competency with Microsoft tools including excel and powerpoint.
* Experience using analytical tools and programming languages such a Python, R, Stata, and SQL, a plus.
