DevTech is looking for a Data Visualization Specialist to work as an institutional contractor on its Analytics, Data, Visualization, and Information Services (ADVISE) contract with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). ADVISE staff comprise much of the USAID Data Services team, led by USAID’s Chief Data Officer (CDO) and situated in USAID’s Bureau for Management, Office of the Chief Information Officer (M/CIO). The Data Services team’s main purpose is to improve the usage of data and information at USAID, so that the Agency continues to ensure its development outcomes are supported by evidence. Data Services’ work spans the “data lifecycle,” including planning, collection, cleaning, analysis, curation, reporting, and governance.

The Data Visualization Specialist position will be fully remote until USAID returns to in-person work when deemed safe to do so. At least 30 days’ notice will be provided prior to the return to in-person work in Washington, D.C. When USAID returns to in-person work, the Data Scientist will be eligible for telework benefits (one day per week) after 3 months of work.
The applicant must be a U.S. citizen to qualify for the required U.S. government security clearance for this project.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
- Develop intuitive, visually appealing static and interactive data visualizations and dashboards (using Tableau and other visualization software) to communicate compelling stories using USAID or other USG development or foreign assistance data
- Understand and integrate data from underlying, heterogeneous sources to create visualization products, to include the creation of web-based maps, cartographic, and other geospatial products
- Incorporate UI/UX best practices to develop compelling and visually appealing data visualizations
- Collaborate with economists, data analysts, web and software developers, Tableau engineers, and other data visualization experts throughout the data visualization process (concept, wireframe development, design and execution, delivery and presentation, and feedback implementation)
Qualifications
- A Bachelor’s degree in a field related to data analytics, business, or a related field
- Three years of work experience developing charts, graphs, reports, infographics, dashboards, and other visualization products to inform decision-making.
- Strong portfolio of static and interactive visualizations, from simple graphics to complex stories, based on data visualization best practices and techniques built using a variety of data visualization tools
- Proficiency in any or some data visualization and related tools is desired. Examples include Tableau, Power BI, CSS, CSS3, D3, HTML, HTML5, XML, Plotly, cartoDB, Esri/ArcGIS and related products, Google Earth, MapBox, Adobe Illustrator / Photoshop, R, R-Markdown, Python, Javascript, and/or Jupyter (iPython) notebooks
- Demonstrated ability to take complex information and/or large data sets and translate them for use in graphic or interactive visualizations for the web and/or other media.
- Familiarity with current web standards-based HTML, CSS and interactive tools such as JQuery or other Javascript-based code libraries; or familiarity with SQL is beneficial
- Effective communication skills to present data, analysis, and visualization concepts to USAID staff
