We’re looking for a full-time Designer to join our studio. The successful applicant will be working within our super-creative team of designers, researchers and writers to create stunning data visualizations, information design and data-fueled digital products.

 

The role
At Beyond Words Studio our work combines journalism, research, design and technology. We’re unified by one goal: to turn complex data and information into compelling human stories helping everyone better understand the world we live in. We do this for world-changing clients such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, WHO, Netflix and the World Bank.

We’re looking for a full-time, highly creative all-round designer with at least four years’ industry experience who would love to join our super-friendly studio in East London. This role requires a creative problem-solver who is passionate about both design and data.

The right candidate will be driven to create inspiring design solutions and visual stories, while also being self-motivated, adaptable and organised. You will have previous data visualization project experience to show us and are used to working with data and information on a day-to-day basis.

You’ll understand editorial hierarchy and have a solid grounding in digital design, typography and layout. An extra bonus would be interactive or motion-graphic experience.

You need to be London-based and legally able to work in the UK.

 

The role involves

  • Hybrid working, both within our East London studio and at home
  • Solving internal and external data visualization and communications challenges in a variety of formats (including charts, diagrams, maps, infographics) and platforms (print, digital, dashboards, motion graphics, presentations)
  • Strong organisational and time management skills
  • Creating moodboards for initial project inspiration which explore colour, style, illustration and type routes
  • Sketching and schematising data
  • Choosing the right visualization device for the right data set
  • Experience with presenting and justifying considered design ideas
  • Artworking, fine-tuning and meticulous attention to detail

 

Skills and qualities we’re after

  • 4 years+ experience
  • Fluency in the basic Adobe Suite and Figma is essential
  • Knowledge of After Effects, PowerPoint, R Studio or Python is desirable
  • Illustration skills
  • Unfailing enthusiasm for data visualization and information design
  • Strong design taste and an ability to justify design choices
  • Laser-like attention to detail
  • Genuine desire to learn and grow
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Responsive to feedback and creative direction
  • Comfortable and creative when working under pressure
  • Ability to work speedily on drafts and not get too attached to work
  • Enjoy working both as part of a team and solo
  • A portfolio that demonstrates working on client projects across a diverse range of projects, subjects and media
