The Role

We are looking for a creative, self-starting data visualisation developer to work on ambitious visual projects on an award-winning data journalism team operating across GlobalData Media and the New Statesman Media Group. The successful candidate will be one of two developers on the team and will play a key role in the design and build of flagship editorial content, working closely with data journalists and editors.

The successful candidate will be working in a collaborative environment on a large data journalism team. A typical month might see you produce two or three public facing projects across a wide range of possible subject areas.

Key Responsibilities:

Write and maintain components for the data journalism team using HTML, CSS and ES6 JS
Collaborate with journalists and editors on graphics and longer term projects, including data scraping and on-going data collection.
Build graphics using best practices, responsive design and in keeping with the brands visual identities.

What we’re looking for:

Must haves

• An interest in news and a facility to work with a wide range of stakeholders, including editors and journalists
• Strong knowledge of data visualisation theory and the benefits and disadvantages of different chart types
• Experience creating interactive data visualisations using d3.js
• Experience working with a JavaScript framework (preferably Svelte)
• Experienced using version control systems (Git/Github)

Nice-to-haves

• Writing accessible, reusable HTML and SVG
• Experience analysing large datasets (e.g. with Node/R/Python)
• Familiarity with AWS/DevOps experience
• Design experience using industry standard tools such as Figma and Adobe Illustrator
• Experience with cartographic data formats (geosjon, shapefiles)
• Experience working with APIs
• Desire to continually develop new skills and participate in the wider data journalism team’s culture of knowledge sharing
