Government data to drive fact-based discussion

The Organization

USAFacts is a not-for-profit, non-partisan civic initiative privately founded and funded by Steve Ballmer. Its mission is to provide comprehensive, contextual, and unbiased government data so that discourse and decision-making is rooted in fact. USAFacts aggregates data on spending, revenue, and outcomes from over 70 different government sources, spanning the federal, state, and local levels.

The New Team

We are building a small special projects data team of approximately four people. The primary responsibility of this team is to execute signature projects, with an emphasis on data visualization. This team will independently identify ambitious opportunities and carry them through final production. Its primary output will be charts, maps, and tables, with accompanying explanation, published on the USAFacts website. The work may also be optimized for social accounts, email newsletters or printed reports.

Ideal Candidates

We seek experienced candidates, with a portfolio of work that that reveals structure and patterns. USAFacts values comprehensiveness and context. Successful candidates will like data viz, government data and being useful. We do not expect a single candidate to be an expert in research, analysis, graphic design, and front-end development. But a successful team will eventually have the following characteristics:

  • Knowledge of JavaScript, HTML and CSS. (Experience with React and D3 is desirable)
  • Understanding of how layout and typography make work that is beautiful, intuitive, and accessible
  • Interest in public policy, and governments. (In the short-term, we expect to work on some econ and possibly some education, crime, infrastructure, or something you are really into.)
  • Data analysis skills (probably R or Python)
  • Basic knowledge of Git
  • Interest in working on a small team

USAFacts is based in Bellevue, Washington. We are willing to consider remote candidates.
