Industry Dive is hiring a News Graphics Developer with data journalism and front-end development skills. You will work closely with across our 20+ publications to frame the direction of projects, find key insights in data and present that information in engaging ways for more than 13 million readers.
As a member of our Data and Graphics team, you will join a fast-growing company and collaborate with more than 100 other journalists. The best candidates will be self-starters who excel at telling meaningful stories through data- and visually-driven methods. A track record of exceptional work, as seen in your portfolio, is a must.
This position reports to the Director of Data and Graphics and the team includes one other News Graphics Developer and a Visuals Editor. We plan to continue adding more roles over time and — as we grow — offer opportunities for career advancement. As a small team, everyone’s perspective is valued and you are encouraged, if you’d like, to shape how we operate and help chart our future. We focus on special projects and the newsroom’s most ambitious efforts. Reporters and editors create daily or quick-turnaround graphics when needed, so you might occasionally be asked to advise or provide assistance.
Industry Dive strives to provide an inclusive, supportive environment where everyone is set up for success. Your voice and experiences matter here. You’ll have the chance to both learn new skills and share your knowledge. Above all, you’ll do important work and make a difference on your team, in the newsroom or through your journalism.
Responsibilities:
- Closely partner with reporters and editors to shape and focus newsroom projects
- Design and code graphics and larger projects such as interactive data visualization pieces, trend trackers and visually-driven feature stories
- Collaborate on analyzing data, finding key insights and deciding how to best tell those stories
- Collaborate on creating milestones and reasonable timelines/deadlines for stories and projects
- Help review code and share feedback on other Data and Graphics projects
- Create or update documentation for best practices and resources
- Create templates and incorporate reusable components into Snorkel, our design system
- Share tools and best practices to empower others and improve their data journalism and visualization skills
What you can bring to the table:
- Curiosity and thoughtfulness
- Excellent portfolio of data visualizations, graphics and/or visual stories designed and coded for the web
- Proficiency in HTML, CSS, JS and at least basic knowledge of version control (Git)
- Solid understanding of design fundamentals such as typography, layout, color, etc.
- Solid understanding of UX best practices
- Enthusiasm for sharing and collaborating with technical and non-technical colleagues
- Significant attention to detail, strong organizational skills and excellent communication skills
- Passion for journalism and digital storytelling
Other possible interests or skills:
- Appreciation of the importance of web accessibility and designing inclusively
- Experience with D3 or other libraries and frameworks
- Experience acquiring (via scrapers, FOIAs, etc.) data and documents
- Experience teaching coworkers new tools, techniques or skills
- Experience with web design and special story presentation
- Being able to identify the nature and limits of a given data set
Not all candidates will check all of the requirements listed above, and that’s OK — we still want to hear from you. Industry Dive strives to provide an inclusive and welcoming environment, and applicants who belong to traditionally underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.
Industry Dive is an equal opportunity employer and we strongly encourage people of color, LGBTQIA individuals, veterans, parents, and individuals with disabilities to apply.
If you feel comfortable doing so please feel free to note which pronouns you use in your application (for example – she/her/hers, he/him/his, they/them/theirs, ze/zir/zirs, etc.)
Industry Dive will not be able to sponsor applicants for work visas.
