The All of Us Research Program is a historic effort coordinated by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to collect data from one million or more people living in the United States and help build one of the most diverse health databases in history. Researchers will use the data to learn how our biology, lifestyles, and environments affect health. This could help researchers develop better treatments and ways to prevent various diseases.

The Senior UX Strategist will work in the Division of User Experience for All of Us. The Division is responsible for creating clear, easy-to-use, and compelling online experiences for All of Us participants and researchers that complement and extend offline touchpoints. The participant and researcher experiences encompass digital products, content, and tools across the program, from helping participants and researchers learn about All of Us, to enrolling, sharing or using data, and being continuously engaged. The Division of User Experience works closely with the All of Us leadership team and program partners to research, design, and implement content, tools, and services in support of program goals.
DESCRIPTION OF ROLE
We are hiring a Senior UX Strategist, Data Experience Design to join our Division. You will lead strategic thinking on how we design and deliver data analysis tools for All of Us data users.
You will work collaboratively with our partners at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Broad
Institute of Harvard and MIT, and Verily Life Sciences to improve the data experience. You will join highly collaborative and cross-functional teams that work on both product-level execution and program-level strategy. Two key products you will work on are Data Browser and Workbench.
You will report directly to the Director of Research Experience and work closely with UX strategists working on data user education, training, community, and onboarding.
Key responsibilities
- Lead the design process for the research data experience, from defining problems to implementing solutions and data-informed designs – all while balancing diverse perspectives and conflicting priorities.
- Develop prototypes and concepts that visualize ways to enhance research workflows supporting a wide range of use cases – from survey research to genomic data analysis.
Support the development of the end-to-end data experience through browsing data, selecting variables, and building cohorts and concepts sets. - Translate quantitative and qualitative research data/insights into solutions and design choices that reflect the needs, wants, and requirements for diverse sets of participants
Document both current and future data experiences and interactions in the form of experience maps, user journeys, scenarios, task/process flows, sitemaps, wireframes, prototypes, or other artifacts. - Establish UX success metrics and collaborate with partners to write detailed UX requirements
Work with partners to prioritize the product roadmap, negotiate technical feasibility, QA products, and iterate as needed. - Communicate role and responsibilities, progress, direction, and outcomes such that stakeholders understand and buy into the team’s design choices.

Travel requirements
- 5-15% of full-time hours once COVID travel restrictions are lifted. This will be for team meetings and/or presentations in Washington, DC
Required qualifications
- University-level training and/or experience in graphic design, data visualization required, undergraduate degree preferred; Master’s degree preferred
- 5-10 years of proven experience in conceiving, refining, and delivering data-centric user experiences at a corporation, design consultancy, or innovation consultancy; experience with research workflows, open data portals, health care organizations, health research institutions, and/or government contracts preferred
- Demonstrated experience translating qualitative, quantitative, and secondary research into insights and solutions across a multi-disciplinary scientific team
- Familiarity with both business and design research frameworks and experience using them in complex environments to define problems and their accordant solutions
- Excellent verbal, written, and visual communication skills, with a particular emphasis on problem framing, visual storytelling, and information design
- Ability to balance diverse perspectives and conflicting priorities
- Ability to present work to executives, partner teams, and colleagues in a convincing and engaging manner
- Proficiency with tools such as Sketch, Figma, Miro, Jira, Asana, as well as Google Suite and Microsoft Office
