Front End Developer /Data Visualization Developer – 1 Year Fellowship

- Participants expected to establish Delaware residency during the Fellowship
The Data Innovation Lab at Tech Impact uses data for social good. The Lab was built to solve community challenges with data – from housing insecurity to economic instability. We develop models and create products used by community partners – from government agencies to nonprofit organizations – to address these challenges directly.
Position Summary
The Data Lab Fellowship is a year-long program intended for technologists with a deep technical skillset and a strong desire to serve their communities. As a Data Visualization Developer on the Data Lab Fellowship team, you will work with our partners to design, develop, and deploy production-grade solutions to social good problems. You will be expected to collaborate with the Data Lab team and clients to design and create user-facing, sustainable, and engaging data narratives across projects. Your work will directly lead to improving people’s lives in communities in Delaware and beyond.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Serve as the team’s lead on user-facing design, including storyboarding visualizations and mocking up interfaces between data and user-facing products
- Ability to fluidly define and iterate through application designs (e.g., structure and aesthetics)
- Author and document reusable code and libraries for routine process
- Define and ensure adherence to testing and validation standards across projects
- Ability to consult clients on the best practices and decisions for enhancing their individual tools and requests
- Develop new user-facing features
- Enhance applications for maximum speed, scalability where necessary
- Collaborate with other members of Fellowship in the design, wireframe, and final build of production-grade user-facing tools
- Oversee all aspects of integrating graphic design and technical implementation
- Translate UI/UX design wireframes to actual code
Essential Skills for Success in Position
- A background and a strong commitment to leveraging data for social good
- 2+ Experience developing software applications using JavaScript (JavaScript (D3.js, three.js, etc.) standards and JS technologies, libraries, and frameworks, such as ReactJS, Angular, Node.js
- Experience building and integrating maps into your designs (such as with Leaflet.js)
- Experience delivering high-quality, scalable software releases and web applications
- Expertise in type, color, icon, and grid systems
- Ability to create or use interaction design pattern libraries – and an ability to articulate the reasoning for these choices
- Experience designing user interfaces using a user-centered process, including planning and executing user research, iterative design, and usability testing
- Experience leveraging front-end design to deliver compelling data narratives (e.g., scrollytelling, interactive dashboards, etc.)
- Experience working with version control platforms, especially Git / GitHub
- Demonstrated experience with frontend testing for production-level work– Mocha, Chai, Jasmine, Jest, writing unit tests
- Familiar with HTML5, CSS3, Responsive Design, HTML APIs
- Facilitating design-thinking exercises with the Data Lab team and project partners
- A self-motivated thinker that works well independently and on collaborative teams
- Ability to translate complex jargon into meaningful, actionable insights for technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to organize and prioritize work efficiently and effectively
