The Washington Post

The Washington Post is looking for a graphics reporter to join an innovative and highly collaborative visuals team in our new Climate & Environment Department.

The Post’s Climate & Environment Department is anchoring a newsroom-wide and global effort to cover climate and extreme weather and their impact on humanity and the planet through revelatory reporting, visual-first storytelling and innovative forms of data-driven journalism.

Candidates should have a strong command of visual storytelling and a body of work that explains complex concepts through illustrations, diagrams, animation or 3D models. Their portfolio should showcase a variety of illustration styles and visual approaches. They should be interested in experimenting with new techniques and technologies in both the physical and digital space.

This person will join a team of visual and data journalists embedded in the Climate & Environment Department working across formats and platforms. The best candidates will be energetic, brimming with ideas and willing to share knowledge and learn from their colleagues, while also juggling multiple stories, staying organized and communicating clearly with reporters and editors.

The Post’s graphics and data reporters produced the analysis and animated mapping at the core of “2C: Beyond the Limit,” The Post series that won the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for explanatory journalism; revealed what fuels the West’s infernos; exposed the gap between what nations declare their emissions to be versus the greenhouse gases they are sending into the atmosphere; and showed where Russian oil flows. We want to continue to conceive timely, memorable and effective visual storytelling off the news.
