Mapping and Geospatial Project Specialist

Job description summary: The Research Data and Digital Scholarship (RDDS) team at University of Pennsylvania Libraries seeks a collaborative and proactive Mapping and Geospatial Project Specialist to provide (a) project and classroom support to Penn faculty whose research and scholarship involves creating, using, and visualizing geospatial data and (b) training for students in geospatial methods, tools, and technologies, and in critical geospatial approaches. RDDS, whose expertise spans text and data mining; public scholarship; digital humanities; digital cultural heritage; qualitative and quantitative data analysis; data visualization; open science, and GIS, facilitates data-driven and data-literate research and scholarship and fosters critical and ethical data communities of practice across the disciplines at Penn.
All Research Data and Digital Scholarship team members are expected and encouraged to dedicate one half-day a week to collaborative, creative, research, or professional development activities. This is a two year term position.
Budgeted pay range: $58-65K commensurate with education and experience
Qualifications: A Master’s Degree in a relevant discipline. 1 to 3 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated facility with ArcGIS and QGIS. Demonstrated experience with web mapping tools (Carto, Mapbox, Leaflet). Demonstrated teaching experience (informal or formal). Ability to conduct outreach to campus departments and centers. Integration of issues such as data ethics, social and racial justice, accessibility, and equity into pedagogy and practice. Preferred: Experience working with historical and georectified maps. Experience with scripting and programming languages such as Python, R, or Javascript that support working with geospatial data.
