Hearst Connecticut Media Group

Hearst Connecticut Media Group’s journalists cover communities in Fairfield and New Haven counties and beyond, serving readers across platforms, including our sites, app, newsletters, social media accounts and more for eight daily and 13 weekly newspapers.

We’re looking for two enterprising, audience-focused and collaborative Investigative Reporters to join Hearst Connecticut Media at a time when we’re growing digital subscriptions.

The Investigative Reporters’ work would appear on HCMG’s new statewide site CTInsider.com and across our network. They would contribute in-depth stories and projects covering a range of topics. Their work would expose wrongdoing, provide accountability, engage readers and drive change.

Duties and responsibilities:

Works collaboratively with editors, other reporters, photographers and audience team members to tell impactful stories across platforms that serve HCMG’s journalistic mission and engage and retain local subscribers and other readers

Reports and writes efficiently and effectively, able to juggle medium-and long-term stories, and follows up when appropriate on in-depth enterprise pieces

Demonstrates a comfort level with using metrics to help inform coverage decisions
Qualifications:

Experience writing or editing at a newspaper, news website or magazine, with particular preference for candidates with examples of strong enterprise and investigative work

Experience filing FOIA requests and analyzing public records and working with data, as well as experience working both individually and collaboratively on storiesProficiency at analyzing data using software such as Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets. Ability to use SQL, Python, and/or R is a plus.

Demonstrated ability to develop sources and follow tips to produce stories

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in journalism, English, communications or related field preferred

Demonstrated success at meeting deadlines for projects and other assignments

Highly organized and detail-oriented with a proven ability to effectively juggle multiple tasks

Ability to speak a second language like Spanish a plus

Valid driver’s license and a working vehicle are required for this position
