Interactive Newsroom Developer

Website The Philadelphia Inquirer

Job Summary

We’re looking for a designer and front-end developer to join the Interactives Desk at The Philadelphia Inquirer. We’re looking for someone to help us tell stories that are uniquely told, built around interactivity, occasionally living, and generally help shape the future of digital storytelling.

What you’ll do

  • Design and build standalone interactive stories – from the initial idea to building the page through all the way to publication.
  • Pitch ideas for stories and help shape ideas that come from the newsroom.
  • Be an advocate for telling stories in unique and digital-forward formats within the newsroom
  • Decide what topics and types of stories you want to focus on (except for elections – there are always elections). We’re not a service desk; we can cover any topic relevant to the Inquirer.

What you’ll need*

  • Design skills to be able to visually convey subjects to readers in a concise, well-designed, and appropriate way.
  • Experience with front-end development including HTML, CSS and Javascript.
  • Awareness, or experience, of React, D3 and Node.
  • Self-motivation, ability to meet deadlines, and adapt to change in a news environment.
  • Ability to QA and document your own work when required.
  • A high quality portfolio of work at any experience level

* If you only meet some of these requirements, apply anyway! There’s a lot of room to learn and be taught on the job.
