Support NASA missions! The Space Telescope Science Institute is looking for a passionate, creative, and versatile Senior Software Engineer to join the Office of Public Outreach. The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is a multi-mission science and flight operations center for NASA’s flagship observatories on the Johns Hopkins University Homewood campus in Baltimore, Maryland. The Office of Public Outreach (OPO) is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining a wide range of websites and applications, including the STScI organizational website, individual mission-specific outreach websites, and other web-based products and services that support internal and external audiences.
Your Role & Responsibilities include:
Lead the development of high-impact interactive features, custom user interfaces, and dynamic visualizations from requirements gathering to architectural design to implementation
Translate design wireframes and specifications into semantic HTML and functional features
Partner with non-technical stakeholders to provide guidance on development capabilities, requirements gathering, and milestone and timeline development
Participate in all team activities such as agile planning, design discussions and reviews
Draft documentation for both technical and non-technical staff
Ensure all development products meet level AA of 508 WCAG accessibility and compliance standards
Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, software engineering, interaction design, visual communications, and/or a related field is recommended.
8+ years of related front-end development experience, with at least 2+ years developing interactive, data-driven applications and features.
Extensive knowledge of HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, and responsive design
Excellent visual and written communication skills
Experience with data pipeline, workflow management, and version control tools
Experience working with API-driven architecture and microservices
US citizenship or Permanent Resident status, for ITAR compliance.

This role is a full-time, five-year term position with an option for renewal. Compensation is commensurate with education and experience. Our excellent benefits include:
