Website Associated Press
The Associated Press is an independent global news organization dedicated to factual reporting. Founded in 1846, AP today remains the most trusted source of fast, accurate, unbiased news in all formats and the essential provider of the technology and services vital to the news business. More than half the world’s population sees AP journalism every day.
The Associated Press seeks a journalist and developer who is passionate about visual storytelling and eager to put lessons from experimentation into practice to join a team that’s creating smart, insightful and entertaining visualizations of data. We’re looking for a data visualizations developer who combines advanced technical ability, a collaborative spirit, and a passion for telling important stories that affect people’s lives. This temporary, grant-funded position ends June 1, 2025 and can be based in any U.S. city. This is a staff position covered by AP’s agreement with the News Media Guild and will focus on AP’s coverage of U.S. elections.
Responsibilities: Reporting to a news editor for interactives and based in Washington, New York or any U.S. city, you will be part of a team that builds engaging data visualizations and explanatory graphics. Together, the team works on a variety of data-rich news projects:
- Building engaging visualizations that help readers understand the most important stories of the day
- Drilling into large data and document sets for AP enterprise stories and investigations
- Building newsroom tools that help us uncover the story and create visual journalism at the speed of news.
In this role, you will primarily focus on AP’s coverage of elections in the United States, joining a team that builds live results graphics and data visualizations that go beyond those results to explain what’s behind the numbers and show the how and the why of winning and losing. You will work closely with the AP’s top-notch team of race callers, election analysts, and explanatory reporters.
Preferred Qualifications: We’re looking for someone with strong front-end and data visualization skills who is a JavaScript expert and familiar with one or more frameworks, such as React, Svelte, Angular or Vue. If you’ve worked in Node or another language for server-side development, that’s a plus. Experience building robust applications is essential, but we’re more interested in how you solve problems than in the syntax you’ve used to solve them.
You are a highly motivated, independent and detail-oriented developer and journalist who is committed to using your technical skills to advance the strong, fact-based reporting of AP’s staff. You embrace best practices, web standards and agile methodologies, and write modular, reusable code. You refactor and test. You keep an eye on new technologies and enjoy developing creative solutions, even under tight deadlines.
You understand that there’s always more to know, and you expect to learn from your teammates in addition to sharing what you know. You’re looking for a collegial environment that involves consistent communication and pair coding, and enjoy sharing ideas with people from diverse backgrounds, areas of expertise and experience.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, such as at least one year of full-time work as a data visualization developer or graphics journalist.
- All applicants must be able to work in the U.S. or be able to gain permission to do so.
- Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Professional competency in a language besides English is a plus.
