Provide instruction for Data Analytics and Visualization (DAV) graduate students and to convey knowledge of multiple elements of data analytics from a professional perspective.

Summary of Essential Functions:

  • Holds instructional class session once a week for the duration of the class
  • Collaborate and coordinate with Program leadership and faculty
  • Holds office hours once a week for the duration of the class
  • Provides core instruction to satisfy primary learning objectives of course
  • Provides timely feedback on and assessment of student work
  • Works directly with the curriculum team

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Prepare lesson plans for the duration of the course
  • Deliver live lectures for students once a week for 8 weeks
  • Maintain consistent communication with students
  • Holding at least one hour of regular office hours every week
  • Replying to any student communication within 24 hours
  • Evaluate and provide feedback on student work
  • Maintenance of Canvas course current throughout the term

In the Visual Storytelling 2 course, students learn about different forms of storytelling and the ways in which techniques such as sequence, relationship, context, and audience can be combined through analysis and design strategies to tell a powerful story. Students continue to engage in the design process and apply principles of human-centered design. Additionally, through critique, students learn to refine information, data, and their design to strengthen and clarify a visual story.

Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to:

  • Understand the importance of context and audience when crafting visual communications
  • Know what type of visual to use given the information that is to be displayed
  • Recognize clutter that doesn’t add informative value and be comfortable cutting it from visuals
  • Craft a narrative and knowing what text is essential to aid the audience’s interpretation of information
  • Synthesize lessons learned to create a compelling, effective visual story using information & data
  • Incorporate interactivity to the experience to sequence information based on audience needs

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • 5 years of related professional experience
