This role exists to keep our work moving and our clients well-served.
Client-Focused Tasks: 80% of your time
Research and Data Support
- Gathering, organizing and analyzing secondary data from public sources (census data, USDA datasets, community reports, etc.) using tools like R, Java Script, Google Sheets, or Excel.
- Supporting the design and implementation of surveys, assessments and interviews as directed by lead consultants.
- Conducting environmental scans, literature reviews and community research to provide context for client projects.
- Helping to identify historical, geographic and equity-related context that enriches our understanding of the communities our clients serve.
- Documenting research processes and data sources so that work can be replicated and built upon.
Content Production and Design
- Creating and formatting presentations, reports and data visualizations in Canva, Google Slides and Google Docs, following SWIM style guides and templates.
- Developing animated or narrated Canva presentations that translate complex content into accessible and visually compelling data stories.
- Formatting and editing deliverables so they are polished, consistent and client-ready.
- Supporting the production of asynchronous learning materials including slide decks, facilitator guides and course content.
Project Coordination and Support
- Tracking project tasks and timelines in project management tools (Basecamp) and flagging anything at risk of slipping.
- Preparing background materials and agendas to support client calls and facilitated sessions.
- Supporting lead consultants by completing discrete, well-defined tasks that keep projects moving forward.
- Communicating clearly and proactively with the SWIM team about progress, questions and blockers.
- Identifying organizations and contacts for focus groups, community listening sessions or partnership outreach as directed.
- Presenting and meeting with clients as needed.
SWIM-Focused Tasks: 20% of your time
- Contributing to the development and documentation of SWIM’s tools, templates and processes.
- Participating in team meetings and sharing learnings from client work.
- Supporting SWIM’s marketing and communications by contributing content for blog posts, case studies or social media as requested.
- Helping to identify and test new technologies that could improve how SWIM works.
Leadership Support
SWIM Associates are supported and held accountable by SWIM Partners and SWIM Consultants. Growth opportunities will be identified collaboratively over time, including potential pathways toward greater client-facing responsibility.
Work Environment
This is a remote position. Shared coworking space can be made available. Occasional travel may be required to support in-person client engagements, though this role is primarily execution-focused and travel will be less frequent the SWIM Consultant Roles.
- Location: Preferred residence in IA, IL, NE, MD,GA, or MN.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a field that emphasizes writing, research, data or communications (including but not limited to sociology, political science, nonprofit management, communications, data science, history or related fields).
- 2–4 years of experience in a role that required managing multiple tasks or projects simultaneously with attention to detail and follow-through.
- Experience or demonstrated interest in nonprofit, food systems, human services or community development work.
- Experienced user of tools in Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides) and Canva .
- Familiarity with tools like Flourish and basic R or JavaScript knowledge
- Ability to organize complex information into clear and engaging insights
- Experience with and/or knowledge of systems and dynamics related to diversity, equity and inclusion.
- Proficiency working with data, including pulling from public data sources, organizing datasets and presenting findings clearly to non-technical audiences.
- Strong written communication skills, including the ability to draft clear, well-organized documents and summaries.
- Self-directed work style: the ability to take a clear task and run with it without needing step-by-step oversight.
- Enthusiasm for learning new tools and technologies with minimal support.
- Ability to work in a fast paced environment with multiple projects ongoing
