We’re looking for a senior developer to help us build data viz, websites, and digital experiences for our clients!
Who You Are
As a senior data viz developer, you’ll need technical expertise, storytelling abilities, and project management skills. Your main focus will be concepting, prototyping, and building websites and data visualizations for The DataFace’s clients. You should have plenty of experience with frontend web development (preferably using Svelte) and building interactive charts with D3.js. You’re creative, passionate about data, and eager to learn new technologies.
Because we’re a nimble, cross-functional team, there will be a variety of tasks that come across your desk (a.k.a. Slack inbox). Some weeks you’ll be building a full website; others you’ll be coding an interactive map for a client’s blog; and others you’ll be developing Figma plugins or internal tools. It’s important you are a self-starter who’s willing to dive right in and take the reins where you’re needed.
Here are a few recent projects you might have worked on if you were already part of the team:
- Building a database and website for The Asian American Foundation that helps educators find vetted resources about AAPI history.
- Creating a dashboard for the National Kidney Foundation to spotlight trends in chronic kidney disease.
- Helping Instacart create its “Scare Score” to identify the best U.S. neighborhoods for trick-or-treating and building a microsite to unveil it on Halloween.
- Working with States United Democracy Center on a website detailing how safety concerns shaped the American voting experience in 2024.
- Developing and maintaining figma2html, a Figma plugin inspired by the great ai2html.
About the Role
- You’ll write the code (in HTML / CSS / JavaScript) that brings client projects to life.
- You’ll improve the team’s development process and instill best practices into our workflow.
- You’ll offer feedback to our design team as they create wireframes and mockups for clients.
- You’ll help shape the creative vision for client projects in their infancy.
Essential Qualifications:
- Proven track record of building interactive, data-driven visualizations and websites.
- Demonstrated comfort coding with a frontend framework (preferably Svelte).
- Deep knowledge of D3.js and data viz best practices.
- Proficiency analyzing and manipulating data using Python, R, Tableau, or similar tools.
- Strong communication skills with experience managing clients and large-scale development projects.
- Ability to navigate a fast-paced environment where you’ll juggle multiple priorities at once.
Nice to Have:
- Familiarity with shaders, WebGL, and/or creative coding approaches.
- Strong writing skills and a sixth-sense for storytelling.
- A keen eye for design, particularly as it pertains to data viz.
- Experience working in a newsroom’s graphics department or at another small agency.
What to Expect from Us:
- A competitive salary, based on your background and experience.
- A benefits package that includes health, dental, vision, and life insurance.
- A remote-first work environment and flexible PTO policy.
- A laptop and annual technology stipend, which can be used on things like a monitor, keyboard, or other work-related equipment.
- An annual professional development stipend, to offset the cost of seminars, conferences, or educational courses.
- A welcoming team committed to helping you grow.
This is a fully remote, full-time (40 hour per week) position, open to anyone whose normal workday will overlap at least a few hours with both U.S. coasts.
Don’t feel like you meet every single requirement? We’d still love to hear from you!
Who We Are
At The DataFace, we empower people, brands, and organizations to tell great stories with their data. Over the past five years, we’ve worked with tech giants, non-profits, and research teams to make complex data more engaging and approachable.
Our team is hyper-collaborative; we’re often in Figma together, workshopping ideas until something sticks. We believe that the best creative work is the sum of multiple perspectives, and invite all team members to have a hand in crafting a project’s trajectory.
Because we’re self-funded and profitable, our agency can be selective in the projects we take on. We lean towards those with social impact, where we can utilize our data viz skills to advocate for things we believe in: social justice, affordable health care, and climate solutions, among other causes. We also like using client projects to push our technical skills, and won’t shy away from a challenge.
We are committed to being an anti-racist, inclusive agency and upholding these ethics in the work we do and environment we foster. We encourage people of color, women and members of the LGBTQ+ community to apply, voice their opinions, and help define the agency’s trajectory.
