To facilitate the rethinking of high school, XQ creates free resources and produces lively experiences spearheaded by data, data visualization, and data storytelling. We utilize the power of data to communicate and emphasize the “urgency for high school transformation”. This year, XQ wants to take its data visualization and data storytelling impact to the next level. The Creative and Data XQ teams believe that web-based, interactive data visualizations could amplify our communication around the “urgency for high school transformation”.

In this job, you will have the opportunity to push your creative limits and develop engaging ways to visualize data. You will be the technical data visualization design expert that gives shape to new data visualizations that support our state policy work, branding experiences, and school storytelling. Your work has the potential to amplify XQ’s messaging to thousands of people.

Responsibilities:
1. Develop, design, and code an interactive, web-based U.S. map consisting of filtered color coding and scroll responsive tooltips.  For this task, the underlying datasets and analysis will be provided to you.
2. Develop, design, and code an dynamic, web-based scrollytelling story consisting of 10+ animated data visualizations. This scrollytelling story will have a global filter to produce 52 US state and territory versions. For this task, the underlying datasets and analysis will be provided to you.
3. Provide expert guidance and recommendations to the team to inform data visualization best design and implementation practices going forward.

Work Hours & Benefits:
Job Type: Freelancer/Contract (Hybrid, Remote Possible)
Job Duration: 2 Months / 5-10 hours per week
Compensation: Negotiable, commensurate with experience

Qualifications:
Extensive portfolio of data visualization projects, including interactive maps and scrollytelling stories.
Experience with D3, canvas, or other visualization libraries and tools.
Experience building map-based visualizations using Mapbox, Leaflet, OpenLayers, or comparable geospatial packages or applications.
Fluency in approaches to a wide variety of interactive products such as data explorers, data dashboards, scrollytelling microsites, etc.
Familiarity with Agile methodology and Design Thinking practices.
Significant experience in developing tools, products, or services that balance user needs, business objectives and technological constraints.
Bachelor’s degree, Advanced graduate degree, or equivalent work experience preferred.
Ability to work in a fast paced, nimble environment.
Flexible work hours to meet moving deadlines.
Expert communication in English – both orally and in writing.
